Please vote for Tangleweed to play CBGBFestival

By Scott. Filed under: TweedBlog.

The Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival takes place later this year at the Congress Theatre in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, which is just a short walk from Scott and Kip’s homes.

The festival is having a contest to award the last slot on the bill, and we’ll need your support to get it.

All voting will be conducted via email, beginning on 10/2.  Each email address can vote once-daily over the two week voting period.  After 10/16, the top-5 vote getters will then qualify for the final spot to be chosen by the Festival bookers.

If we win, we’ll play on a bill with David Grisman, The Avett Brothers, Little Ed and the Imperials, and many other great bands.  And some of us might just walk to the gig!

Please see this link for the full details:  http://cbgbfestival.com/contest/

Thanks for your support.

Tangleweed at Wakarusa 2007 Video

Here are the final two songs from our Wakarusa ‘07 set, “Heroin” by Velvet Underground and “The Orange Blossom Special”, featuring a quick chunk of “Interstellar Overdrive” by Pink Floyd.

Most of the hair you see on Billy’s head in this vid has since been donated to Wigs For Kids, and that pole holding the tent up apologizes for somewhat blocking your view of Paul playing bass.

Big Thanks again to Bret Mosiman for booking us at Wakarusa - we had a fantastic time.

Paul Newman singing Plastic Jesus

By Kenneth Rainey. Filed under: TweedBlog.

From Cool Hand Luke, Paul Newman dons a banjo and sings Plastic Jesus. The song has been covered numerous times, by bands ranging from the Flaming Lips to Jello Biafra. Wikipedia has a brief history of the tune.

My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs.

R.I.P. Paul Newman, you will be missed. We lifted the title of our new CD from a line in another of his many excellent films.

Sandy River Belle Tab

By Ryan. Filed under: TweedBlog. Tags:

Hey, here is what I played on the record. Hook the 5th string on the railroad tie to A. There are some backward rolls in this arrangement. Good luck, it is tricky. I am still working on an improved arrangement.

I separated the A and B with some empty measures. It is an AABB tune

Speed Bump tab

By Ryan. Filed under: TweedBlog. Tags:

Hey banjo folks I am a huge fan of Noam Pikelny who keeps true to Scruggs tradition yet moves the banjo technique into the future. I have been hearing about him for years through friends and colleages like Colby Maddox, Rita Ruby, Steve Doyle, Nelson Mandrel and many others that watched him grow up at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and saw him for the first time at the Abby Pub in Chicago and my Jaw was dropped which does not happen that often.  Noam embodies a rare musicality at a very young age. This guy is amazing.

The trick to this arrangement is the use of the first finger on the fourth string seventh fret to keep a Bela type forward backward roll going to get the melody.

Speed Bump is the first song off of In the Maze his solo album. This record rocks and is actually in the Rock catigory on my Ipod.

Whiskey in The Hall banjo tab

By Ryan. Filed under: TweedBlog. Tags:

Here is the tab for Whiskey in the Hall. Again swing hard. This is mostly melodic with some Scruggs in the B part. This Tune was inspired by Bill Monroe’s Uncle Pen.
