Baby Gramps plays Cape Cod Girls

Check out this footage of Baby Gramps performing Cape Code Girls on David Letterman in 2006.

I saw this when it was originally broadcast and was happy to stumble upon it again today.  This song bears some resemblence to the song “South Australia”, which Tangleweed recently recorded for an upcoming edition of the Old Town School of Folk Music’s SONGBOOK cd series (Bloodshot Records).

I used to live in Eugene, Oregon and had the pleasure of seeing Baby Gramps perform several times.  He’s an amazing talent, combining insane slide guitar freakouts with throat singing and a massive penchant for palindromes (or as he’d call them, semordinilap), and other essential musical elements not touched upon by most mere mortals.

One of his best palindromes is “train or a camera spool = loops are macaroni art.”.

I best remember him singing a song about how the guys on the street during Prohibition would extract and drink the alcohol contained within STERNO (”and they called it HEAT!”).

If you get a chance to see Baby Gramps perform, I highly recommend jumping at the chance.

  1. Scott–

That’s good stuff. Dan Zanes recorded a version of this tune on his very likeable Sea Music CD:
