It’s always interesting to think about how much of what has become part of the popular music canon is an accident of history. One would be hard pressed to find a finer guitarist than Blind Blake. But Blind Blake made his recordings for the Paramount label, a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Chair Company, and Paramount didn’t survive the great depression. Rights to Paramount’s back catalog have changed hands a few times, but the label has never had the muscle of a major record company pushing its back catalog.
