John Fahey playing Poor Boy/ Steel Guitar Rag

John Fahey plays a little a little lap slide guitar in this medley of Poor Boy and Steel Guitar Rag from a 1978 show in West Germany.

Steel Guitar Rag has an interesting pedigree. The song is most closely associated with Bob Wills’ steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe, who owns the copyright. Wills and McAuliffe helped make the song a standard for steel guitarists in the 1930s. The song is essentially Sylvester Weaver’s guitar rag ported to electric steel guitar.

Merle Travis’ name has since become appended to the copyright. He wrote lyrics for the tune in the 1940s. Some instrumental versions of the song still list Travis as cowriter.
