Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant
Here’s a cool short clip of steel guitarist Speedy West and guitarist Jimmy Bryant cutting loose for a little while. These guys played on tons of Capital sessions in the 40s and 50s, and also made some great recordings as a duo. These have been collected on two good CDs by Razor and Tie, and on a ridiculously comprehensive Bear Family Box set
.
I was fortunate to speak with Speedy several times while I was working on an Article for the Journal of Country Music on steel guitar legend Earl ‘Joaquin’ Murphey. Speedy summed up the feelings of so many other musicians of his era when he said, “Joaquin’s my idol.”
