The Dubliners singing Whiskey in the Jar

Here’s a great clip of Luke Kelly singing ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ with the Dubliners. In as much as I can tell, this looks like the classic lineup that made those great records in the 1960s. That’s group founder Ronnie Drew sitting at the top of the screen playing nylon-string guitar. The group formed in 1962, playing sessions at O’Donaghue’s Pub in Dublin, and their best work reflects the energy and informality of a good pub session.

Tangleweed learned ‘The Leaving of Liverpool’ from the Dubliners, and we recorded it for our second record, Where You Been So Long?. We’ve been known to butcher ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ from time to time when we’ve been overserved before our third set.

Here’s another great vocal performance from Luke Kelly, leading an acapella rendition of Brendan Behan’s ‘The Auld Triangle’. The song comes from his play The Quare Fellow, and has become a standard in the trad repertoire.

As of this writing, Ronnie Drew is still a working musician. Luke Kelly passed away in 1984.
