The Dubliners singing Whiskey in the Jar

Here’s a great clip of Luke Kelly singing ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ with the Dubliners. In as much as I can tell, this looks like the classic lineup that made those great records in the 1960s. That’s group founder Ronnie Drew sitting at the top of the screen playing nylon-string guitar. The group formed in 1962, playing sessions at O’Donaghue’s Pub in Dublin, and their best work reflects the energy and informality of a good pub session.

Mississippi John Hurt singing Spike Driver’s Blues

The YouTube binge continues. This is a great clip of Mississippi John Hurt singing ‘Spike Driver’s Blues’, one of 13 sides he cut for Okeh records in 1928. This clip is probably from Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest television show. His guitar skills had scarcely changed in the 35+ years since his first recordings. His playing still has the same gentle bounce and subtle melodicism of his best Okeh sides.
