Old Dillards footage from the Andy Griffith show
The Dillards are hands-down our favorite bluegrass band. We’ve recorded several songs from their repertoire: Banjo in the Hollow, Katy Kline, and Black-Eyed Susie, to name a few. The Dillards made several appearances on the Andy Griffity show as the Darling Boys. Here they are playing their song “Dooley”.
More after the jump
Here they are doing a rather odd version of the beloved filthy old New Orleans ditty “Salty Dog”, with a disturbingly enthusiastic female vocal. I’ve never heard anyone do this tune in ‘D’ before.

Terrific! I was trying to find a recording of the Dillards doing Salty Dog but apparently there isn’t one other than this video from the Andy Griffith Show. I love it how you waited for Ernest T’s rock to come flying in through the window after Dooley. Perfect. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks, Chris. The editing work isn’t mine, actually. I’m just as grateful as you are that someone took the time to post this to YouTube. The Dillards are a band that we Tangleweed folks admire greatly, and it’s very cool to see them in action.
