Satan is Real at the Hideout
We’re participating in a very special show at the Hideout in Chicago at the end of this month. Our pal Edward Burch will be performing the Louvin Brothers’ masterpiece Satan is Real in its entirity. The full press release is below.
For One Night in Chicago, Satan is Real
Illinois musician Edward Burch will lead a performance of the Louvin Brothers’ seminal work Satan is Real at Chicago’s Hideout on Sunday, June 25.
On Sunday evening, June 25, 2006 at 8 p.m., Chicago’s famous country music venue The Hideout will host a one-of-a-kind event celebrating the music of the Louvin Brothers, country-gospel pioneers whose unique gift for harmony would later influence artists from the Everly Brothers to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.
The highlight of the evening will be a performance of the Louvin Brothers’ fire-and-brimstone opus, Satan Is Real–an album known as much for its outrageous cover art as for the phenomenal songs contained therein.
For event organizer Edward Burch, whose critically acclaimed effort with Jay Bennett (ex-Wilco), The Palace at 4am (Part 1), was a sleeper favorite of 2002. For Burch, this show is something he has wanted to put together for some time. “The emotional resonance of Satan Is Real is hard to overstate,” he says. “What you’ve got going with Satan Is Real is something that seems to transcend the doctrines of organized religion. It’s tempting to want to play this up for camp value, but we’re all such fans of the music that we really want to treat it with the respect it deserves.”
Burch, Andrew Leach, and Kenneth PW Rainey (Tangleweed) will play a selection of the Louvin Brothers’ gospel and secular tunes. The trio will then be joined by Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen (Dolly Varden) for the performance of the Satan Is Real album proper. Opening the evening will be Chicago string band outfit Tangleweed, offering selections from the Louvins’ tribute to the Delmore Brothers.
