Back to the studio
Tangleweed is heading back to Kingsize in Chicago to record some more tunes for our as-yet-untitled second record. We’re planning to record four tunes:
- Ginseng Blues
- Drunkard’s Blues
- I Found a New Baby
- Medley: Sir Lucas de Sommerville/The Musical Priest/Whiskey Before Breakfast
Mike Hagler will man the controls. As was the case with our last session with Mike, we’ll track most of the instruments live, and overdub the vocals. You can hear one of the songs from our last session with Mike, Hard Times, on our music page.
These are all songs that have been a staple in our live sets for at least a year, so we’re anxious to finally get studio recordings of them. Ginseng Blues is an old-timey tune that I learned from a Kentucky Ramblers record. Drunkard’s Blues is a variation on St. James Infirmary that Bob Wills recorded in the 1930s. The fiddle medley includes a slip jig by our fine fiddler, Billy Oh, and two Irish standards. The last tune, I Found a New Baby is a classic swing tune that was also performed beautifully by Tex William’s Western Caravan.
We’ll pass some of the results on to the folks on our mailing list soon.
