Another nice review of our record

Mark Phillips over at Americana UK wrote some nice things about our record.

From the Americana UK website:

Tangleweed “Just a Spoonful (and other Folksongs of Rural Cook County)” (Squatney Records 2005) Just when the smooth (Krauss, Dixie Chicks, Nickel Creek), the idiotic (Hayseed Dixie) and the novelty (the forthcoming “Picking on Joss Stone” project) seem to be dominating the bluegrass scene, there are reasons to be cheerful nonetheless, and Tangleweed are one of them. Based in Chicago, and playing juke joints and well, the Metropolis Coffee House on West Granville, they take a stripped back, lo-fi approach to the whole deal, which shouldn’t be confused with a lack of care or skill. The selections are well chosen, nimbly picked, proficiently sung and almost of them make you want to shake your ass; the thing kicks off “Train 45” (often known as “Reuben”) which will be familiar to most, most likely from a Dillards record. The Ozark / LA boys pop up again as Tangleweed put down a neat cover of their “Banjo in The Holler”; other selections are “Make Me Down a Pallet on The Floor”, “Orange Blossom Special” and “Old Joe Clark”- more well-loved traditional material than you can shake a stick at. None of this is to suggest that this is some slavish pursuit of authenticity- the arrangements are their own, and there’s a dexterity and joy about the affair that makes it an unusual and welcome break from the usual. Here’s hoping that Dave Rawlings or Old Crow Medicine Show are listening. www.tangleweed.org MP
