Nike sinks to new low, rips off Minor Threat

By Kenneth Rainey. Filed under: OffTopic, TweedBlog.

Nike, in a move that crosses the line between everyday villainy and cartoonish super-villainy, has appropriated the artwork from Minor Threat’s debut LP for their new ‘Major Threat’ skateboarding tour. And Dischord is pissed.

Minor Threat, symbol of all that is good and decent in this world Evil Nike corporate whores

Like a lot of people I know, Minor Threat was a huge part of my difficult adolescence. And one of the things that drives their continuing appeal decades after their last recordings is the relentless noncommercialism of their music. Music by kids, for kids. So Nike’s attempt to coopt their integrity is almost unfathomably vile.

From Dischord’s website:

To longtime fans and supporters of Minor Threat and Dischord this must seem like just another familiar example of mainstream corporations attempting to to assimilate underground culture to turn a buck. However it is more disheartening to us to think that Nike may be successful in using this imagery to fool kids, just beginning to becoming familiar with skate culture, underground music and DIY ideals, into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike’s mission.

So screw Nike. If you want sneakers, go buy a pair of blackspots.
