A few technical details
Here’s a list of equipment used in the recording session, for all you gear nerds…
- Two AKG C414B-ULS microphones, set up as a stereo pair
- One RCA Type BK5A ribbon mic, set in proximity to the vocalist
- Four channel Ampex tube mixer (I think it was an MX-35)
- Otari MX5050 quarter-inch twp track tape deck
Bob also split the signal and ran it through a MOTU into his Power Book. The early MP3s we’ve made available are from these digital dumps and are not transfers from the original analog tape.
The band was arranged in a straight line, in this order (L-R):
- Scott (guitar)
- Paul (bass)
- Billy (fiddle)
- Kip (mandolin)
- Ryan (banjo)
The instrument seperation on the recordings is very good. Their placement in the mix pretty much reflects their placement in the room.
